Manchester United held Liverpool to a goalless draw in a Premier League game staged at Anfield on Sunday.

Nine months on from the 7-0 humiliation they suffered at the hands of their great rivals, United turned in a much more disciplined display which admittedly featured a bit of fortune as the hosts floundered in front of goal.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate came close to breaking the deadlock from set-pieces, with Trent Alexander-Arnold dragging a shot narrowly wide from range. United largely relied on counterattacks, although Alisson was required to make a smart save from Rasmus Hojlund.

Substitutes Joe Gomez and Cody Gakpo came close late on, before Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second bookable offence in the game’s closing stages for dissent.

The results mean that Arsenal goes back on top of the table after their earlier 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion at the Emirates.

On the same day, Aston Villa came from a goal down to beat Brentford 2-1 in an ill-tempered match that saw both teams receive red cards with West Ham beating Wolves 3-0 in the other game staged at the London Stadium.
