Mara Sugar’s defensive midfielder, Mathias Isogol, has earned his first call-up to the national team and attributes much of his success to the influence of Bonface Ambani, Mara Sugar’s technical director.

The former Nzoia Sugar midfielder is currently part of the Harambee Stars squad set to face South Sudan in the CHAN qualifiers Reflecting on his selection, Isogol describes the emotional journey leading up to this moment.

“This is the first time I’ll be able to represent my nation—something I’ve worked so hard for since I started playing football. When I received the letter, I cried; I couldn’t believe it, and even now, being in Juba, it still feels unreal,” he shared.

“Honestly, this is all thanks to our technical bench, the coaches, and especially our technical director, Bonface Ambani. He’s been a huge influence on our team and me as a player. He’s always emphasizing discipline, hard work, and self-belief, telling us, ‘Work hard and let God decide the rest.’”

Ambani’s relentless drive has left a lasting impact on Isogol and his teammates; “He’s very competitive and doesn’t like losing, which has helped us maintain an unbeaten record at home this season with Mara Sugar,” Isogol explained. “It’s our first season in the top flight, and his high expectations push us to perform well both at home and in away matches because he knows our potential.”

Isogol is not only proud to represent his country but also sees this opportunity as a chance to be an ambassador for Mara Sugar.

“I’m here to represent my club and be a good ambassador, especially as the first player from Mara Sugar to earn a call-up to the national team. When the opportunity comes, I’ll grab it with both hands and make my coaches and teammates proud,” he said.

Looking forward, Isogol remains committed to working hard, saying; “I aim to give my best so that I can earn future call-ups. I’ll just keep working hard in the league,” reinforcing his dedication to continuously prove himself.

Isogol is also eager to learn from his new national teammates, particularly Austine Odhiambo from Gor Mahia, who has also worked under Ambani and is an inspiration to Isogol.

“I’m looking forward to playing alongside Austine Odhiambo in the national team. He’s also been coached by Bonface Ambani and is a top player,” Isogol remarked.

Kenya will be taking on South Sudan in the CHAN Qualifiers in a two-legged tie and the Mara Sugar midfielder will be hoping to make his national team debut.
