Sofapaka FC head coach Robert Matano feels he’s been overlooked for the Harambee Stars coaching role.

Speaking to the club’s media team, Matano said, “I’m a football coach; I can coach any team as long as we agree on terms. I’m a professional—I even coach youth players.”

On why he has never been given the opportunity to lead the national team, Matano noted, “I’ve been here a long time, and they know what I can do, but they’ve overlooked me. They know which coaches can do what, but maybe their interest isn’t in me.”

Coach Robert Matano is arguably Kenya’s most successful coach in the Kenya Premier League, with four titles to his name.

Drawing from his extensive experience, the former Tusker FC head Coach also offered advice to upcoming coaches, emphasizing the importance of dedication and resilience.

“One has to have passion for football. You have to sacrifice to be a coach, persevere, remain patient, and stay consistent. Coaching comes with many challenges—you don’t sleep well, you don’t have time for yourself, and you’re always thinking about the team and the game,” he explained.

He also highlighted the importance of continuous learning and relationship-building with players.

“Acquire coaching materials, research, look for players, and understand them like a father. Counsel them. There’s no shortcut in coaching—it’s always about hard work.”
