President William Ruto awarded the Kenya World Athletics Championships 2025 Team medalist Ksh27 million.

The president announced the award when he hosted the team for a breakfast meeting at the State House in Nairobi. “Each gold medallist has received Ksh3 million, silver medalist Ksh2 million, and Ksh1 million for bronze in line with my directive,” he said. In addition, the government is set to pay half the cost of an affordable house of choice for every medalist.

The team won 11 medals in the championships held in Tokyo, Japan. 7 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze, coming second to the United States. President Ruto commended the athletics team. “Out of 198 nations in the world, we were second best after the United States. That is the league we play in, the league of champions and excellence. That is where Kenya belongs,” he said.

President Ruto also committed to recruiting 500 sportsmen and women in the disciplined forces to boost their training and nurture their talent. The President stated he had discussed the matter with the Chief of the Defence Forces and the Inspector-General of Police.

The Kenya Defence Forces will recruit 200, and the National Police Service 150 sportsmen and women. The Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, and the National Youth Service will also recruit the remaining 150.

President Ruto explained that this will help Kenya position itself as a powerhouse in various sports. “This will provide the sportsmen and women a base to get effective training and necessary equipment and support to continue raising the standard of sports in our country,” he said.
