Gor Mahia has appointed Ghanaian Charles Akonnor as their new head coach ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The 51-year-old who previously worked with his nation’s national team takes over from Siniša Mihajlović who parted ways with the club even before Season 2024/25 could close.

Akonnor, a former Ghana Black Stars captain, earned 51 international caps and scored 13 goals during his playing career. In his playing days, Hhe had a successful five-year stint in the Bundesliga with VfL Wolfsburg, where he made 121 appearances between 1998 and 2003.

He has been one of the coaches to manage Ghanian arch rivals Hearts of Oak and Adante Kotoko with his other stint in his country being with Ashanti Gold.

He arrives with his own backroom staff having roped in fellow Ghanaian Kobi-Mensah Bismark, an experienced coach who has previously worked with Bechem United, Accra Shooting Stars Academy, Great Olympics, and Karela United, as his assistant.

Other Ghanaians in the bench include Joshua Kofi Boafo who will be the video analyst and Owu Ben who arrives as the goalkeeping coach.
