History has been made in Eritrea football after they sent a team to represent the nation in the forthcoming CAF Women Champions League Qualifiers-CECAFA region for the first time.

The country will be represented by Denden SC in the competition that is for September 4-16th in Nairobi, Kenya and according to Auka Gacheo, the Executive Director of CECAFA, the team had been given a special consideration to feature in the tournament.

“We are pleased that for the first time a team from Eritrea will feature in the Zonal qualifiers,” Gacheo is quoted by the continental body.

The special consideration comes after Eritrean teams were banned from participating in continental and zonal matches due to restrictions imposed by their government over the fear of players deserting in mass.

Recently the senior men’s national side played a friendly game against Niger ‘A’ side and now Denden is allowed to play in qualifying; an indication that their government is slowly easing restrictions on tournaments.

Hosts Kenya will be represented by Police Bullets FC, while Kampala Queens FC who are handled by Ethiopian coach Asefa Firew Hailegebreal will represent Uganda.
