Chelsea FC sorry outing in the league was extended to the UEFA Champions League after going 0-1 down to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night.

The London side had the ball in the net after 15 minutes but the goal was disallowed after the referee spotted that Thiago Silva had handled it into the net and while they had chances of their own that saw new signing João Félix rattle the crossbar, it was Dortmund who took the lead.

Shortly after the hour mark, Dortmund pulled a quick counterattack from a Chelsea corner after Gregor Kobel saved well from Reece James. Karim Adeyemi received the ball in his own half and blitzed past Enzo Fernández into the Blues box before rounding Kepa and calmly tucking home to send the Westfalenstadion wild.

While tempers flared freely later in the game, Dortmund kept their cool to see off the game and carry a goal advantage heading into the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

In another match of the day, Benfica beat hosts Club Brugge 2-0 in their bid to return to the quarter-final stage.

After a scoreless opening half, Benfica took the lead six minutes after half-time through a João Mario penalty and added a second two minutes from time via David Neres.
