Zambia’s Red Arrows advanced to the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup group stage after defeating South African giants Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 aggregate tie in Durban.
Kaizer Chiefs won the second-leg match 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, courtesy of a 65th-minute header by Bradley Cross. Assisted by a free-kick from substitute Mfundo Vilakazi, Cross’s goal leveled the tie.

Red Arrows had previously won the first leg in Zambia by the same 1-0 scoreline, thanks to a goal by Alassane Diarra.
Under coach Fernando da Cruz, Kaizer Chiefs dominated possession on their home turf and created numerous scoring opportunities. Early threats came from Thulani Mabaso, Pule Mmodi, and Wandile Duba. Despite falling behind in the second half, Red Arrows maintained a highly disciplined defensive approach to absorb the continuous pressure.
Chiefs continued to waste late chances to seal the game in regulation, with Ethan Chislett setting up opportunities for Mduduzi Shabalala and Velebayi, but both failed to convert.
To withstand the final onslaught, Red Arrows introduced Ricky Banda and Norris Kalamba, successfully protecting the aggregate draw to force a penalty shootout. The Zambian side ultimately held their nerve, winning the shootout 3-2 to secure a memorable qualification.
The defeat marks a disappointing and early continental exit for Kaizer Chiefs. Red Arrows, meanwhile, celebrate a massive achievement as they take their spot among the 16 clubs in the tournament’s group stage, scheduled to begin in November 2026.
