Egypt made a positive start and were rewarded in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour rose highest to head home Karim Hafez’s inviting cross for his second goal of the tournament.

Australia nearly found an early breakthrough through Cristian Volpato, whose effort rattled the crossbar, before gradually growing into the contest. Their persistence paid off early in the second half when Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned a dangerous free-kick into his own net, restoring parity.

The North Africans responded well and came close to regaining the lead moments later, but Omar Marmoush failed to convert from close range. Australia also threatened, with goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir and the Egyptian defence standing firm to deny the Socceroos.

Neither side could find a winner during normal time or the additional 30 minutes, sending the tie to a penalty shootout.

Australia’s hopes suffered an immediate setback when Harry Souttar blasted their opening penalty over the crossbar. Egypt remained flawless from the spot, converting all four of their penalties before Lucas Herrington struck the bar with Australia’s fourth attempt.

Hossam Abdelmaguid then stepped up to convert the decisive penalty, sparking celebrations among the Egyptian players and supporters.

The victory sends Egypt into the Round of 16, where they will face either Argentina or Cape Verde for a place in the quarter-finals.
