Claudine Gasarabwe has assumed the role of interim president of the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) following the resignation of Fabrice Shema, less than a year after he was elected to lead the governing body.
Shema resigned on September 29 after being sentenced by a court to six months in prison, suspended for one year. He had earlier been released after pleading guilty to charges in the case.

His resignation triggered a leadership transition under FERWAFA’s statutes, which provide for the First Vice President to assume the presidency on an interim basis when the position becomes vacant.
Gasarabwe, who oversees finance and legal affairs as First Vice President, will therefore manage the federation’s day-to-day operations until a new president is elected.
FERWAFA, a non-governmental and non-profit organisation affiliated with FIFA and CAF, will not automatically hold an immediate election following Shema’s departure.
Instead, the remaining Executive Committee members, working with the federation’s Electoral Commission, are required to convene an Extraordinary General Assembly within the timeframe prescribed by the statutes.
The assembly will elect a new president to serve the remainder of Shema’s four-year mandate. Having completed one year of the term, the successful candidate will serve the remaining three years.
Gasarabwe will continue overseeing FERWAFA’s affairs until the electoral process is completed.
