Fountain Gate head coach Robert Matano has been fined TZS 500,000 for his remarks criticizing match officials following his team’s 1-1 draw against Simba SC.
The veteran coach accused referee Abel William of poor officiating, claiming that he favoured Simba during the game. Speaking after the match, Matano expressed his frustration, stating:

“That was not a foul; it was an offside. The referee officiated poorly. A team like Simba should be able to play without the referees helping them. I don’t expect referees to give them an advantage against a team like Fountain Gate… The referee was very biased.”
His comments sparked controversy, with some supporting his stance while others viewed it as an unjustified attack on match officials. In response, the board running the NBC Premier League imposed a financial penalty on the experienced coach for his outburst.
Tanzania Premier League Board(TPLB) issued its ruling on the incident, stating:
Match Number 136: Fountain Gate 1-1 Simba “Fountain Gate head coach Robert Matano has been fined TZS 500,000 for violating league regulations by publicly criticizing match officials during their game against Simba Sports Club at Tanzanite Stadium in Manyara. This ruling is based on law number 45:2:1 of the Tanzania Premier League, which outlines the expected conduct of coaches.”
