Mathare United have parted ways with head coach John Kamau following a difficult run of form that has left the club struggling for consistency in the FKF Premier League.

The decision comes with only three matches remaining before the end of the 2025/26 season, as the Slum Boys attempt to salvage their campaign after a disappointing second half of the year.

Mathare have managed just four wins in 16 league matches played in 2026, a run that ultimately piled pressure on the technical bench. Kamau’s final game in charge ended in a damaging 2-0 defeat to relegation-threatened APS Bomet on Sunday, a result that appears to have convinced the club to make changes.

In a statement confirming the development, Mathare United announced: “The Club has reached a decision that Coach John Kamau steps aside from his role as Head Coach with immediate effect.”

The club further confirmed that assistant coach Mohammed Mchulla will immediately take over on an interim basis for the remainder of the campaign.

“Assistant Coach Mohammed Mchulla will take over as Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the 2025/2026 season,” the statement added.

Mchulla’s next tasks will include games against Mara Sugar FC, Ulinzi Stars before finishing the league with a game against Bandari FC.

The club is currently placed 14th with 35 points, just three points below Ulinzi Stars who is in the last position in the relegation zone.
