Ajax and Bayern Munich will usher in a new era for Kenyan football when the European giants meet in the inaugural match at the Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi on January 5, 2027.

The two clubs confirmed the fixture on Wednesday, describing it as a major occasion that will introduce the country’s new sporting venue to the international football community.

The facility, also known as Talanta Sports Stadium, has been under construction since 2024 and will serve as Kenya’s national stadium. With a capacity of 60,000 spectators, it is expected to play a significant role during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, alongside hosting football and rugby events.

The opening fixture brings together two of Europe’s most decorated clubs. Bayern have won the UEFA Champions League six times, while Ajax have lifted the prestigious trophy on four occasions.

Ajax welcomed the invitation, describing the match as both an honour and a valuable sporting challenge during the Dutch league’s winter break.

Bayern Munich also expressed enthusiasm about taking their team to Africa, where the German champions enjoy a substantial following.

The club’s board member for sales and marketing, Rouven Kasper, highlighted the continent’s deep passion for football and the opportunity to connect directly with supporters. He added that the event would help raise the profile of the Bundesliga and allow supporters to experience the German champions in person.

The January showdown is expected to put Kenya’s new stadium firmly on the global football map ahead of AFCON 2027.
