Japanese top-flight side Sagan Tosu has confirmed the departure of Harambee Stars midfielder Anthony Akumu.
Last month, Pepeta had revealed that the player was leaving the club after failing to appear in any of their league games and was seeking a new challenge as he looked to revitalize his career which had looked stagnant in Japan.
“We would like to inform you that Sagan Tosu has terminated the contract with player Anthony Akumu by mutual agreement,” the club said in a statement.

Akumu joined Tosu at the start of 2023 on a two-year deal but found games hard to come by where he only managed to feature in three J-League Cup and scored one goal in the process. Even in the Cup games, Akumu didn’t complete a single game with the former Gor Mahia man managing 56 minutes in the first two games and coming from the bench with 21 minutes remaining in his last appearance for the club.
The midfielder has not played club football for six months having not played any competitive football through 2022. He hasn’t managed a full league game since November 2021 when he featured for South Africa giants Kaizer Chiefs against Moroka Swallows.
Despite his inactivity at the club level, Akumu has been a constant figure in the Harambee Stars team under coach Engin Firat where he has played the full minutes in Stars’ last seven games and even scored as Kenya held Russia to a 2-2 draw in a friendly last year.
Before moving to Japan and featuring for Chiefs, Akumu had previously featured for Zesco United, Khartoum Club, and Gor Mahia.
