Tusker FC defeated Sofapaka FC 2-0 to move joint top of the SportPesa Premier League table on Sunday, 14 December, at the Kasarani Annexe.

Ian Simiyu, the only change in Charles Okere’s starting line-up, scored both goals within eight minutes in the second half to hand the Brewers a third straight victory.

The breakthrough in the rescheduled fixture arrived in the 70th minute. Simiyu’s low effort from the left took an awkward bobble and slipped through the legs of Sofapaka goalkeeper Edward Olak at his near post.

It was a welcome relief for Tusker, who seven minutes earlier had seen a Charles Momanyi header controversially ruled out, despite appearing to cross the line.

Simiyu wasted little time in sealing the result. In the 78th minute, he met a fine delivery from substitute Eric Kapaito and calmly slotted home to complete his brace, his second goal for the club since joining in February.

The Brewers showed their intent early, with Dennis Oalo and Fabian Adikiny both going close inside the opening 20 minutes.

Thomas Omolle rattled the side-netting in the 37th minute after beating his marker, while Cliff Oruko spurned a good chance after the break with a strike from the edge of the box.

Momanyi thought he had finally broken the deadlock in the 63rd minute, guiding in a Simiyu free-kick, only for his header to be disallowed as Sofapaka scrambled the ball clear from what looked to be over the line.

Simiyu’s late double ensured Tusker claimed a deserved victory, and after a difficult start to the season, the mood around Okere and his side is suddenly far more optimistic.

The win lifted Tusker level on 21 points with leaders Kenya Police, though they remain second on goal difference.
