Norway pulled off one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, eliminating five-time champions Brazil 2-1 to book a historic place in the quarter-finals for the first time.
For much of the contest at the New York New Jersey Stadium, Brazil controlled possession and created the better chances but found goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland in inspired form. The Norwegian shot-stopper produced a string of superb saves, including a penalty stop from Bruno Guimarães, to keep the South Americans at bay.

After soaking up relentless pressure, Norway struck when it mattered most. Manchester City striker Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, rising highest to power home Andreas Schjelderup’s inviting cross and stun the Brazilian supporters.
Brazil threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, but Norway remained composed and sealed the victory in the 90th minute. Haaland latched onto another attacking move to fire home his second goal of the evening, taking his tournament tally to seven and drawing level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé in the Golden Boot race.
Neymar converted a stoppage-time penalty after coming off the bench, but it was only a late consolation as Brazil crashed out in the Round of 16.
Norway will now face either England or Mexico in the quarter-finals as their remarkable World Cup journey continues.
