Kenya Handed Bye in First Round of 2028 LA Olympics Qualifiers

Harambee Starlets will face Seychelles in the second round of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games Qualifiers after being given a bye in the first round.

In a draw conducted on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at the headquarters of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo, a total of 35 nations will take part in the African qualification series, which will be played over five rounds.

Only two teams will secure qualification to represent the continent at the women’s football tournament of the 2028 Summer Olympics, scheduled to take place from July 11 to July 29, 2028.

While Kenya will not feature in the opening round, a total of six nations will be facing off in this stage where Sudan will be taking on Comoros, South Sudan coming up against Madagascar and Mauritius taking on Djibouti. The first-round matches will be played between June 1 and June 9, 2026.

Away from the Kenya v Seychelles tie, other second round games include;

• Guinea vs Cameroon

• Burkina Faso vs Equatorial Guinea
• Rwanda vs Ethiopia
• Botswana vs Tanzania
• Angola vs Namibia
• Malawi vs Zimbabwe
• Uganda vs Zambia

The Second round matches are scheduled to be played between October 5 and October 13, 2026 with Kenya set to face either Malawi or Zimbabwe in the third round should they overcome Seychelles.

The third round is set for February 23 to March 6, 2027 with the fourth round set for October 4 to October 12, 2027. In this round, the winners from the third round face off against opponents from parallel fixtures.

The qualification campaign will culminate in the fifth and final round, to be played between November 23 and December 4, 2027, where the remaining teams will compete for the two available slots at the Olympic Games.
