Mombasa United started brightly and nearly took an early lead when Jackson Watee found space inside the box in the fifth minute, but his effort flew narrowly over the crossbar.

Christian Lubulu had another chance five minutes later but failed to find the target, before Sharks responded through Franklin Amolo, who missed a close-range opportunity.

Watee came close again with a header that forced Sharks goalkeeper Collins Obwalo into a crucial save, while Rodgers Agal missed a good opportunity in the 43rd minute as United continued to press.

The hosts broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute when Toeri converted from the penalty spot. United doubled their lead 12 minutes later, Waziri tapping home after Khamis Abdulrahman beat two defenders before setting him up.

Sharks reduced the deficit eight minutes from time through Wayne, who finished from Eusters Chasara’s cross.

United held on for the win, but Sharks remain in the contest ahead of the return leg in Nairobi on October 6.
