Sudanese football giants Al Hilal SC are preparing to undertake major renovation works at their home ground in Omdurman, which was badly damaged during the civil war that erupted in Sudan in 2023.

The conflict also affected the stadium belonging to their domestic rivals, Al Merrikh, leaving both clubs with damaged facilities.

Al Hilal have reportedly been considering the rehabilitation project since the Sudanese army regained control of their stadium in 2024. The ground has suffered extensive damage to its playing surface, seating areas and internal rooms.

Before the conflict, Al Hilal Stadium was certified by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and hosted both domestic club matches and international fixtures.

According to local reports, the club is now preparing to move forward with the refurbishment, although details of the project’s financing have yet to be disclosed.

Once the work is completed, the stadium could resume hosting Sudan Premier League matches, offering a boost to efforts to restore football infrastructure in the war-affected country.

Al Hilal are set to continue playing in Rwanda’s BK Pro League for another season before planning a return to Sudan’s top-flight competition at the end of the campaign.

Built in 1964, Al Hilal Stadium underwent major renovations in 1992 and 2018. The venue has a capacity of approximately 25,000 spectators and was previously regarded as one of Sudan’s leading football grounds.
